Pray For Divine Appointments & Right Happenings

This morning I was driving my daughter to preschool and talking with the Lord. There's something I've been praying to happen, something I have been praying to see the Lord do, and the thought occurred to me, "Do I need to figure out what door to open? Do I need to make something happen? Maybe I need to figure out my next step..."

It's easy to fall into wrong train of thought when we're waiting on the Lord to move. We believe that if the Lord isn't moving that we somehow have to make something happen for ourselves. We start to doubt that the Lord is leading us and directing our steps, and that we can trust Him with our future. 

While I was still in the midst of thinking this thought, the Lord suddenly arrested my attention with a memory from years ago. He brought me back in a vision to another place and another time, when He the Lord made something happen for me out of His power and His strength. While He was showing me something from the past, He spoke to my heart and reminded me that I don't have to make things happen for myself, He the Lord will do it. I only need to wait on Him, and to pray that He will provide the divine appointments and right happenings for me.  

I want to share this story with you. I pray that if you are in a place right now of believing that you need to make something happen for yourself, that this story will encourage you to wait for the Lord to bring about the right time and place to make things happen for you. Only He is all-knowing and all-powerful to put every piece together in the right way to make things line up perfectly for you.

Back in 2015 I was working for a church. I had been working there for over a year and I loved my boss and position, but the Lord began to move my heart to desire something different. At the time I was overworked and underpaid, but I didn't care because I enjoyed what I was doing. Until one day, I didn't.  

I can't remember when I began to feel differently, but one day I began to "feel" like I should move into development work at a non-profit. Now I had no experience, and the only person I knew that worked in development didn't know of any openings.  

I tried to forget about it but this feeling wouldn't go away. Instead, it began to grow and intensify. I remember thinking, "This doesn't make any sense! It's not at all what I majored in and I have zero experience. I can't get a job in a development department without something to my name."

I applied for jobs and I talked with my friend about it, but nothing was working out. I wondered if the Lord would do something with it, but I couldn't make anything happen for myself.  

One day my friend asked me to go on a double date with her and her fiancé, me and my boyfriend (now husband). It was a great idea! She and I were trying to introduce our guys to each other, we wanted a connection to make sure the 4 of us would be best friends in the future.

Her fiancé just so happened to work as a director in development for a non-profit. I knew this, but I really didn't think anything about it. During the course of dinner I ended up talking about how I felt the Lord moving me in this direction. I shared this feeling I had, and that I felt like God had something different for me than where I was working. Nothing happened during dinner, except that I shared what I had done in the past (events, project coordination) and how I felt the Lord moving me to do something different. This was on a Saturday.

Monday morning I got a text from my friend. Her fiancé wanted to know if I was seriously interested in development. He just so happened to have a resignation letter from someone on his team on his desk when he got to work that morning. This team member just so happened to be the one who was in charge of events and projects on their development team. And it just so happened that my experience fit in perfectly with the person they were looking to hire.

The Lord happened to put me in that room, at the very right time, so that I would be the one who fit the job that the Lord was about to open for me. He happened to give me the right appointment, at the very right time. He happened to work it out, and all I had to do was live my life the way I had been, waiting on Him. He intercepted me and moved me into a completely different future.

A few months ago the Lord prompted me to write a prayer down while I was studying Habakkuk. I was drawn to the first few verses of Habakkuk 2, but it was the words "appointed time" that jumped out at me.  

The Hebrew word for appointed time is moed, and there's something significant that I believe the Lord has for us regarding this idea of appointed times.

Moed: appointed times, meeting, feast, festival

This word moed is often used to describe the appointed times of feasts and festivals in the Old Testament. But this word doesn't quite accurately describe what the Lord is saying to Habakkuk here. The Lord is telling Habakkuk that He has picked an appointed time for the vision to happen, and He will make it happen at that time. I love the way Sarah Fisher describes moed, "Moed, instead, reflects the times that God has specifically appointed to honour and remember moments in history when God rescued his people."

Moed is the idea of the Lord intervening on behalf of His children, rescuing them, and us remembering those times. This is where the Hebrew feasts and festivals come into play, it's a remembrance of the Lord and what He has done.  

We do the same thing when we celebrate Easter, remembering the Lord and His death, His resurrection, and how His death bought our freedom and victory. And again on Christmas, remembering the birth of our Lord and Savior. Moed is a celebration of remembrance, an appointed time in which we remember God.

But moed is derived from another Hebrew word, yāʿad: to fix, appoint, assemble, meet, set, betroth.

Yāʿad is the idea of the Lord meeting with us, His bride, at an appointed time to engage in marriage. It's a beautiful picture of the future we have in heaven with our Beloved Betrothed!

But the Lord arrested my attention and asked me to begin praying for moed moments, for divine appointments from Him. He asked me to start praying that He would set up appointments between us (Him and me), and that I would surrender to His set appointed times for me and my life.

And then He reminded me that I used to pray for qarah moments too.  

Qarah means to encounter, meet, befall, happen, come to meet. In the Old Testament, qarah is most often depicted as something that "happens" to someone.  

The most famous passage often repeated is in Ruth 2:3 "So Ruth went out to gather grain behind the harvesters. And as it happened, she found herself working in a field that belonged to Boaz, the relative of her father-in-law, Elimelech."  

Ruth happened to end up in the field of Boaz, the relative who would find her attractive and want to marry her, who happened to be a relative of her father-in-law. This is important, because in Hebrew law it's a close relative who can be a kinsman redeemer, who can marry a woman whose husband has died and thereby redeem her and her future. She happened to end up there.

Are you waiting to meet your spouse? Pray for a qarah moment, that the Lord would happen to direct your steps to meet your future Ruth, your future Boaz. He directed Ruth's steps, He can direct yours too.

There's another interesting place that this word shows up, and it's in the book of Esther. The first time we read of it is in Esther 4:7 "And Mordecai told him all that had happened to him, and the sum of money that Haman had promised to pay into the king’s treasuries to destroy the Jews." At this point in the story Esther is married to the king, and Haman hates Mordecai and the Jews and has figured out a way to kill them all.  

Mordecai happened to hear how Haman was going to destroy the Jews, and he told Esther about Haman's plans that she might appeal to her husband the king. She does this, and the second time we see the word qarah is in Esther 6:13, "When Haman told his wife Zeresh and all his friends everything that had happened to him, his wise men and his wife Zeresh said to him, “If Mordecai, before whom you have begun to fall, is of Jewish descent, you will not prevail against him but will surely fall before him.” "

What happened to Haman? The very law he put into place ended up backfiring on him. He was hanged on his own gallows. But first, let's look at the story together, because I want you to understand God's heart. He desires right happenings for his people, and He will cause them to happen even in the face of those who hate you.

So the king said, “Who is in the court?” Now Haman had just entered the outer court of the king’s palace to suggest that the king hang Mordecai on the gallows that he had prepared for him.

5 The king’s servants said to him, “Haman is there, standing in the court.”

And the king said, “Let him come in.”

6 So Haman came in, and the king asked him, “What shall be done for the man whom the king delights to honor?”

Now Haman thought in his heart, “Whom would the king delight to honor more than me?” 7 And Haman answered the king, “For the man whom the king delights to honor, 8 let a royal robe be brought which the king has worn, and a horse on which the king has ridden, which has a royal crest placed on its head. 9 Then let this robe and horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king’s most noble princes, that he may array the man whom the king delights to honor. Then parade him on horseback through the city square, and proclaim before him: ‘Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor!’ ”

10 Then the king said to Haman, “Hurry, take the robe and the horse, as you have suggested, and do so for Mordecai the Jew who sits within the king’s gate! Leave nothing undone of all that you have spoken.”

11 So Haman took the robe and the horse, arrayed Mordecai and led him on horseback through the city square, and proclaimed before him, “Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor!”

12 Afterward Mordecai went back to the king’s gate. But Haman hurried to his house, mourning and with his head covered.

Esther 6:4-12

Haman not only died for trying to kill God's people, he also happened to have to honor Mordecai publicly before his death. Now, that's what I call God's justice.

You don't have to direct your own steps or cause things to happen for yourself. All you have to do is make yourself available to the Lord, and then say yes when He shows you what's next.  

Pray for the Lord to make things happen for you, to give you right happenings. Pray for the Lord to give you appointments that change your future. Pray that the Lord would meet with you. This type of prayer will cause you to end up right where you need to be, exactly when you should be there. You don't have to make it happen for yourself, God will do it for you.  

And He will even do it in the face of those who hate you. So don't give any thought to those who wish you harm, God will exact His justice and revenge on them. You need only be still in His presence, and pray that He directs your steps aright.

Lord God Almighty, worthy is Your name!

You alone are holy and worthy to be praised.

Yahweh, I pray for Your glory to descend on me.

I pray that You would meet with me, 

connect with me.

I pray for right happenings, 

and that you would give me divine appointments.

Order my steps aright, 

that I would walk in Your will for me.

Cause things to happen for me.
